NOW&AFTER`19

COLLECTIVE IS NEAR

Now&After’19 will be held at Center of Creative Industries Fabrika
17.04 – 12.05.2019

Organizers:
Media Art Center Now&After
CCI Fabrika
Supported by French Institute in Russia

Starting this year International Video Art Festival Now&After will work in a new format. Festival’s editions based on open call will be held every even year, as a biennale. In the year between them, we are going to hold a festival-exhibit featuring new works of artists from Now&After previous editions.

Now&After’19 will take place as an exhibition, and next year the festival will take the familiar form, accepting artists’ applications.

Now&After’19 theme is “Collective Is Near”.

Curated by Marina Fomenko

Collective is not an empty word for us. We live in a collective and near it, coming in contact with its different types: groups, teams, parties, occasionally entering them and leaving them, retreating a safe distance away and choosing a suitable one.
What is a collective? Is it a group of people united by a common cause, or an inviolable union from a not-too-distant socialistic past? Is it a crowd bound to a single purpose, or a group of people cherishing their shared memories? Where does the influence of a crowd end, giving way to individuality? Where are the limits of the mimicry, dissolving an individual in a collective, and when does the conflict begin? How do the Morphean collective unconscious and the repressed personal unconscious manifest themselves?

International Video Art Festival Now&After’19 will be held with support from the French Institute in Russia which allowed the French artist Anne-Sophie Emard and the Russian artists Elena Artemenko to become the guests of partner festivals, Videoformes Digital Arts Festival and Now&After Video Art Festival.

The special program of the festival, as usual, includes performances, meetings with artists and curators, as well as the showcase of international festival programs. This year among our guests will be Videoformes Digital Arts Festival (France), Athens Digital Arts Festival (Greece), CologneOff Festival (Germany), International Videopoetry Festival VideoBardo (Argentine), The Exquisite Corpse Video Project (ECVP). Sergey Filatov will present a spatial-acoustic performance “Cloud of Overtones”.

Participants

Collective Is Near exhibition

1. Gentle Women (Alexandra Artamonova, Evgeniia Lapteva ), Russia, Utrica, 2017, 7:45

In one fairy-tale story a young girl faces a challenge to knit eleven shirts from nettle, to suffer pain not saying a single word. Video performance focuses both on this subject and also on situations, when expression becomes impossible due to different reasons: political or personal, internal or external censorship.

2. Roi Group (Anna Butenko, Antonina Gorbenko, Varvara Grankova, Lyuba Sautina, Victoria Chrenova), Weeds, Russia, 2017, 6:36

The video is a kind of the meditation embodying ideas that come in a dream. Land of dreams – much like an art – is an alternate reality that lives by its own laws, both available for humans and largely unexplored. Things in a dream often differ from what we get used to, actions are occasionally absurd, become meaningless or take different new meanings. In the focus of the video – an absurd action of women cutting the grass with axes. With its hypnotizing rhythm and the beauty of the working women, all the harmonious picture is rather deceiving: women work hard in the field washed down with the chilly morning dew. And what is going on? Everyone is free to choose his own answer.

3. Trouble Collectif (Melania Avanzato, Arnaud Brihay, Zacharie Gaudrillot-Roy, Jindra Kratochvil, Stephane Libert,), Night Interiors, France, 2018, 16:47

Night Interiors is an installation using video projection, a montage showing interiors of an artificial building. Rooms are real ones, but scenes are imaginary, inspired and showing a common vision: although presented micro fictions look autonomous, those daily life scenes are crossed by simultaneous occurrences from a room to another. Without any chains of causation, our lives, like archetypes, are echoing in a network of signs that only an outside look can see.

4. Elena Artemenko, Game, Russia, 2018, 10:00

There are three persons on the playground, each of which use own semiotic system (the nursery rhymes, the body language and adult’s verbal cliché). Each of performers creates their own game and rules of interaction with the space. How can they build their communication? Is it possible to compromise and interact? And how could they get out of their language obsessions?

5. Dmitry Bulnygin, Mycelium, video mapping, Russia, 2018

Any human ritual requires an understanding of the center and orientation cues. When attaching themselves to tree trunks, wood fungi drink the trees’ life-giving sap. As an archetype serving as a nourishing body, the world tree fills up the consciousness, thus, providing the fungus’ mind with nutritious moisture and the meaning of life.

6. Anne-Sophie Emard, Descendance, France, 2015, 23:00

Descendance is a multimedia work broadcasting seven silent films that follow one another on a screen.
Each film is composed of a fixed shot, landscape filmed with a film camera and inlays, extracts from movie films. These are details of characters, most often female icons, whose identity we guess without being convinced. The combination of these images coming from two different worlds, varying by their temporal processing and their texture but associating themselves fully thanks to the colorimetric retouching, offers to the eye a new moving image without fixed origins.

7. Marina Fomenko, A Ball, Russia, 2018, 7:50

"Every day I count wasted in which there has been no dancing" (Friedrich Nietzsche).

For someone, dancing in Moscow park is a real festal day, an opportunity to be oneself and turn back time.

8. Gabriela Golder, Ordinary People, Argentina, 2014, 11:12

A crowd running aimlessly. No place to go. They are many and are looking for a prey. From a distance the bodies are just thumbnails and the street a battleground. A scenario of diffused war, ownership dispute. Some kicks, another falls, one dies, the others look, and continue running.

9. Alexandra Mitlyanskaya, School, Russia, 2018, 4:00

Once, this condemned building had known better days. Its walls remember voices, laughter, and the sound of the bell, calling students to class, sunlight that used to brighten up halls and classrooms, teachers and students when shining through the windows — now boarded up shut. Now this empty school beckons children who probably don’t even have a clue about its past.

10. Vivian Ostrovsky, The Title Was Shot

The Title Was Shot was commissioned for a conference of film theoreticians in Berlin in 2009 entitled: The Cinematic Configurations of ‘I’ and ‘We’. Made of fragments from over 25 films, dating from the 1920s to the 90s, this mischievous short features cowboys, Indians and damsels in distress.
Tarzan, Jane, a transgender gorilla, and a menacing lion tango from frame to frame, prodded by Wittgenstein, Gilles Deleuze and Slavoj Zizek’s philosophical considerations. A fast-paced, heart-pounding cinephilic farce.

Spatial Sound Performance “The Clouds of Overtones”

During his performances, Sergey Filatov uses a whole series of the authorial musical instruments and sound devices. There are an electrical lyre, Ecantel, Rotator and other instruments of his own design. The leading role in his sound performance has 26-strings electrolyre, created by Filatov in 2015. Unique feature of this instrument is the ten strings simultaneously sounding by contactless influence of alternating magnetic field. Strings’ oscillation generates a cloud of overtones – multidimensional harmonic sound without definite tone. During the performance the sound-artist demonstrates considerable diversity of sound-producing techniques as well as live looping and sound canvas with weaving of field recordings from author’s collection. The performance will be held in a quadraphonic regime.
