NOW&AFTER’16
NOW&AFTER’16 theme is ECOLOGY WITHOUT BORDERS.
The sixth edition of the Festival will take place at The State Darwin Museum from October 22 till November 29, 2016.
Opening Now&After’16 – 27 October at 7 pm, at the State Darwin Museum (Vavilova st., 57).
Ecology studies interactions among organisms and their environment.
In today's world the meaning of the term “ecology” has gone far beyond the field of biology. Speaking about the ecology in a broad sense, we often have in mind the ethical component. We are talking about the ecology of culture, social ecology, political ecology, the ecology of relationships, etc., and not to forget about studying the complex relationship between humans and the environment.
So what do the artists focus on?
· Ecology as a relationship between the organisms and the environment or ecology in a general sense?
· Environmental catastrophes or ecological balance maintaining?
· Relationships between humans and the environment or the life of nature itself?
· The growth of cities or rural ecosystems development?
· Social or cultural ecology?
· Ecology of the relationships among people or between people and animals?
· Alienation from nature or integration with it?
· Contamination of the environment or preservation of untouched nature?

COMPETITION PROGRAM
1.Jan Adriaans, Stay, the Netherlands, 2015, 06:21
In a car workshop type space, between the pristine surfaces of car parts, archetypes of mass production, a construction of power is unfolding between a Doberman Pinscher and its owner. A Doberman is a special breed, they are gracious, loyal, and potentially aggressive to strangers. Both the owner’s and the dog’s consciousness are formed within this relationship. There seems to be a constant focus from the man (a disembodied voice) on the dog, and the same attention is demanded from the dog towards the man. By the obedient appearance of the dog, it seems to concede to the rules it’s been given. But by knowing the rules it starts to gain power itself. The impression the video gives moves between floating through an abattoir where fresh slaughtered live stock is vertically stored and moved around in this almost perfectly hidden horror of death, and a peek into a shop window, where commodities are on display.
2.Ålena Artemenko, Soft Power, Russia, 2016, 10:00
The video represents a ritual materializing the metaphor of "pulling the trigger with someone else's hands." The objects in the video (a gun, a flag and a hand) are made of silicon (a material, that by its tactile properties is similar to the human flesh). Mechanistic sounds of viola and cyclical action with clearly written score and the observance of hierarchies within the characters resemble the force parade (which is gradually falls apart), a little creepy, like a blank shot stuck in a throat, that suddenly sounds in our heads.
3.Veronika Burger, Songs of Fortune, Austria, 2015, 08:39
In the course of preparation of a planned solo exhibition at the Artists Unlimited gallery in Germany I consulted three different fortunetellers, asking them to tell me about my artistic fortune. Every fortuneteller got the same three questions: What is the vocational fortune going to be? What is the financial future going to be? Is the exhibition going to fail? The collected material became the textual base for my video "Songs of fortune". It operates with the structure of an opera that was re-arranged and re-sung. On the visual level I analyze the white cube situation of the Artists Unlimited gallery and question power structures. The Artists Unlimited Gallery is replaced by a venue of a Greek tragedy/comedy.
4.Aida Colomenero Diaz, Exodus, Spain, 2015, 03:30
Inspired by the poem of Angela Figuera Aymerich inside She Poems Project.
A woman ran. She gasped and ran. She stumbled and ran. With a solid fear below the eyebrows and a child in her arms.
She ran through the earth that smelled like just dead people...
She looked everywhere. She wanted to stop. Sit on a bank with her little son. Sit on a bank and breastfeed in peace.
But she could find a place.
5.Furen Dai, Commandments for Women, USA, 2015, 05:11
This work is inspired by the conversation around the content found in an ancient Chinese book called Commandments for Women. This book is written by a Chinese woman scholar named Ban Zhao in around 100 C.E.
6.Cristiana De Marchi, Doing&Undoing. Motherhood, Lebanon, 2014, 04:40
In ancient Greece Pharmakos was the ritualistic sacrifice of a scapegoat, consisting in the expulsion of an individual, the Pharmakos, in order to gain a collective purification. Although he wasn’t guilty of anything, his scope was exactly that of representing any possible form of misadventure: by expelling him, the city got free of an untouchable, of a taboo, who in fact did take responsibility for everything and everyone. Therefore the Pharmakos is at once the outcast and the rescuer. Motherhood explores the dichotomy of exclusion/inclusion, sacrifice/salvation, through a juxtaposition of presences: the victim and the executioner, the witness and the mother, to symbolize all possible emotional attachments to all the involved roles.
7.Addoley Dzegede, The Crazies, USA, 2014, 02:51
This short film chronicles small battles waged underfoot to the soundtrack of O Louco, by fado singer Maria Alice.
8.Luca Ferri, Tottori, Italy, 2016, 06:00
9.Fonte&Poe (Alessandro Fonte and Shawnette Poe), Claim, Italy, 2015, 02:42
A group of people imitates the sound of cicadas among the ruins of an abandoned Romanic church. The action affirms the right to frivolousness while being also an expression of nostalgia and decadence. It investigates the question of the southern identity through the stereotype of a picturesque rurality. The choir’s claim oscillates between the evocation of lightness and the attempt to connect with nature, the landscape and the once sacred place. In the classical symbology the cicadas represent the ambiguous balance between serenity and recklessness, joy and negligence, they are the light-headed attribute of the God Apollo and a symbol of immortality.
10.Marie-France Giraudon, Entro(SCO)py, Canada, 2016, 15:30
A video/experience, intimate and extreme, inside a glacier affected by global warming. In the manner of an endoscopic camera probing human organs, a strange character explores the cavities excavated by melting ice. Like a foreign body, he travels to the depths, revealing the inner metamorphosis of the site while transforming himself. In this metaphorical crossing, between a performative act, a challenging physical experience and a reconstructed imaginary experience, the body reveals the fragility of this natural environment, which humans are eroding. The experience ends in the sounds and the drabness of a port area. This unexpected culmination expands the scope of the journey, offering the viewer the possibility to reinterpret the work from an ecological point of view.
11.Nick Jordan, The Atom Station, UK, 2015, 13:20
The Atom Station is a film centered upon the industrial and natural landscape of Iceland; interfusing the cultural, economic and ecological forces that shape the island. From vaporous hot springs and lava fields to the peculiar structures of geothermal power stations, the film combines Iceland's dramatic and volatile terrain with two corresponding voice-overs from the past and present: poet W.H. Auden, reading ‘Journey to Iceland’ (1937), and environmental activist ?mar Ragnarsson.
The film is titled after Halld?r Laxness’ satirical novel The Atom Station (1948), which imagines Iceland sold to the USA, as a strategic military-industrial base..
12.Clara J:son Borg, Scores towards a baroque care, the Netherlands, 2016, 06:06
The video is an extended choreography where a human body, visualized through the eye of the camera, interacts with a projected image of a tapestry. A tapestry with nature motives; man made nature. The cameras movements, the screams towards the project and the reflection that the voice over delivers, based on an interview with a nurse about representation of care, opens up conversations about the relationships between nature/culture, space/time and the body as disappearing and caring object.
13.Anna Lindemann, Beetle Bluffs, USA, 2013, 11:35
Anna Lindemann’s animated film "Beetle Bluffs" captures the beauty and complexity of an ecological system, illuminating the dynamics of nine beetle mimics and their wary lizard predator. Developed in collaboration with the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology, the film is inspired by a pioneering 1938 paper on beetle mimicry by Philip Darlington, a former curator of the museum. Using artifacts from Darlington’s research, and the insect specimens cited in the original paper, the film brings to life the stories that accompany each specimen within a natural history collection and captures one scientist’s relationship to his animal subjects. The music for "Beetle Bluffs" was inspired by the beetle mimics’ biology and Cuban habitat.
14.Anuk Miladinovic, Parting. Dedicated to RM, Switzerland, 2015, 07:31
First there is nothing… The dark grey, the shiny grey, the bright grey of a bridge. A bridge, which was cut out from its surrounding is the setting of a recurring act. Three coats are hanging in the middle of the balustrade… The white surface of the sky is as impenetrable as the clear geometry of the grey concrete… It’s a rite of restlessness, a rite of escape. Nobody knows what drives them. Four people, who do not speak. They know each other for a long time. They run, every day. Until one of them leaves. They are prepared for this farewell. Like an athlete who finally enters the field. Three people, who do not speak. They know each other for a long time. They are waiting. It’s quiet. Wind is blowing. It’s almost impossible to hear their steps on the grey concrete.Three pairs of gloves on the concrete shore. They belong to the three, who are sitting there, staring at the water. Perhaps their restlessness has gone. Perhaps they are just pausing for a short while. Three sites, three pairs of gloves, three coats and the grey bridge. Then nothing. (by Mira Sacher)
15.Frédéric Moffet, The Magic Hedge, Canada, 2015, 09:00
The Magic Hedge explores a bird sanctuary located on a former Cold War Nike missile site on the north side of Chicago. Left to wander and observe, the viewer becomes aware of the park's open secret: men looking for fleeting sexual contacts within the trees and shrubberies. The video highlights the many contradictions of a site historically devoted to military surveillance and now designed to preserve and control the “wildlife”.
16.Liza Morozova, Screws, Russia, 2015, 03:45
In her work the artist reflects on the expression “tightening the screws”, which has a distinct political overtones and means a set of measures to limit freedom. She takes this idiom literally, trying to gradually weaken or loosen the screws on the construction of rusty pipes, surrounding her. She continues until getting exhausted. The performance lasted for 7 days (35 hours) and was featured as part of the parallel program of the Moscow Biennale, “The Artist is Hidden” exhibition at “Solyanka” gallery. As background music for the performance there are songs about freedom of different times and countries.
17.Denis Mustafin, Death Scene, Russia, 2014, 01:00
«It's not blood, it's red», Jean-Luc Godard.
18.Christian Niccoli, Untitled, Germany, 2013, 04:10
The work consists of a single scene, showing an hostile, empty and silent landscape. Suddenly a helicopter flies from the horizon towards the camera. At a certain point the helicopter stops and a rope gets thrown out of the cabin. A man lets himself down this rope. Ones he touches ground, the rope gets pulled back into the cabin and the helicopter flies away. The person remains there, alone.
19.Slava Otrokhov, Anna Kortyukova, Albert Soldatov, New Cheremushki, Russia, 2016, 12:30
Slava Otrokhov’s diploma project for Rodchenko Art School. 2016.
An autobiographical story about what happened to an artist when s/he decided to become a property owner.
20.Benjamin Ramírez Pérez, A Fire in My Brain that Separates Us, Germany, 2015, 15:00
In an initially deserted room objects slowly begin to move; they are manipulated from the off-screen space, being pulled and dragged by strings, cables or the carpet. Thus a 'ghostly' choreography emerges, with the objects taking on a life of their own, vanishing and reappearing. The control of these processes from the off-screen is made visible, by showing the strings attached to the objects as well as parts of the acting persons on the edge of the frame. This is accompanied by superimposed subtitles, which consist of a collage of existing film dialogue: Lines from the sub-genre of 'gaslighting' films are combined, taking the eponymous Gaslight (1944) as a starting point. A text assemblage on seduction and betrayal unfolds.
21.Augustin Rebetez, Birds, Switzerland, 2014, 06:00
"Birds" is a stop-motion video about humans trying to become birds. Very poetic, we dive in an original world full of strange mechanisms, dark craws, distorted bodies and epileptic images.
22.Keri Rosebraugh, A Letter to My Sister, Italy, 2015, 09:00
"Last year I took a flight from the Antarctic: to Svalbard, Norway, which is a lonely group of islands, located almost at the top of the world. This area has one of the world’s fastest changing landscapes with the most extreme changes in seasons. This video titled A Letter To My Sister represents the fragility of both humans and our planet as well as reminding us that all things are temporary."
23.Katerina Sidorova, Act 4. Farewell, the Netherlands, 2016, 05:00
Exploring the logic of heroic myths, I'm looking for the subtle borderline between a hero preparation and a feat itself, the time when the hero has only been selected, but he's still passive. Why are we humans so fierce in choosing heroes among us? What kind of salvation do we expect? Is the one we call for help so invincible? And why are we in such a hurry to say goodbye to him?
24.Maryam Tafakory, Fragments of a Letter to a Child Unborn, UK, 2015, 05:00
Using gesture and textual fragments, unknown guilt, fear and the strangeness of singular becoming plural are retold as a voiceless, anonymous narrative. Text becomes the body for a hand in an umbilical dilemma, portraying the thoughts of a young woman going through an emotional trauma, facing abortion.
25.Yael Toren, Earth, Israel, 2015, 02:52
An inverted virtual scene of a futuristic imagery, back to an ancient origin, embryonic and terminal at the same time, linked to the dust of creation and earth of burial. The sculptural-material body, blindly withdrawn into itself, breaks up and crumbles before our very eyes. The whole cycle of life is completed; seemingly, the snake really bites its own tail. The embryonic image that Toren created seems vulnerable, though of a stony texture, or the opposite way around: an image of a forgotten fossil having “natural” physical characteristics. A hyper-realistic scene, culminating in a shining explosion within the darkness.
26.Nancy Wyllie, Moth Vitals, USA, 2015, 04:07
Moth Vitals is a short doc about two extraordinary cases seen by RI Department of Environmental Management Veterinarian Dr. Peter Belinsky. His reflections on the requests made by long time clients who share an extraordinary reverence for life ask all of us to make no distinction between higher and lower organisms; to extend our circle of compassion to all living things and to fully embrace the mystery that is life.
27.Takayuki Yoshida, Ponpoko Mountain, Japan, 2016, 10:00
A Romanian sculptor, Constantin Brancusi, once said: “who is no longer a child is no longer an artist”. The ponpoko mountains are open-air equipped playgrounds of white color, installed at some parks in Japan. This poetic work expresses the encounter between the white color and children in the unique landscape featuring domed curves. It is also an homage to the Robert Flaherty’s documentary film “Nanook of the North”, which depicts the encounter between the white color of snow field and Inuit children in the landscape defined by the domed curves of igloo.
28.Pim Zwier, All what is somehow useful, the Netherlands, 2013, 07:38
A multitude of animals brought together in a rhythmical sequence of photographs. The images blend together similar to the cross breeding of animals. An accumulation of bygone days, captured in photos, in which the animals are replaceable, but the same employees frequently reappear. Years of studies and experiments on animals are reduced to a few images per second. The outcome of the research derived from the image or remains a mystery. Seeing is comparing; discovering similarities or differences, seeking for an ideal, gratification of curiosity, optimizing utilization.
'All What Is Somehow Useful' is based on the historical glass plate photograph collection 'Julius K?hn' of the Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
NON-COMPETITION PROGRAM
1.rc campos, Êîñíèñü óãëÿ ãëàçàìè, Áðàçèëèÿ, 2015, 03:20
The village of Pecém, in northeast Brazil, has been passing through intense transformations during the last decade. Around five years ago a Coal Conveyor Belt was installed there, extending through 13km of the landscape and taking mineral coal coming from Colombia to a recently installed steel mill. There is a lake, dunes and native vegetation all the way being contaminated by the coal dust and particles. There’s also a community who’s been suffering from diseases caused by the coal. The artist collected many of these particles and embodied it by wearing a coal mask and creating a coal parangol? (in reference to Helio Oiticica). The artist returned to the landscape to anthropomorphize the environmental problem, giving it a face and a body, embodying the mineral coal and shaking like the land does when the conveyor belt is working.
2.Natasha Dahnberg, Headache, Sweden, 2016, 02:40
There are plenty of reasons for a person to have a headache. The remedy for it can be found in the most unexpected places. For me quite unexpectedly such a remedy turned out to be a balcony. It has become my salvation and my little ecosystem.
3.Shaun Gladwell, Skateboarders vs Minimalism, UK, 2015, 53:28
“Skateboarders vs Minimalism” is a dynamic group portrait that connects Gladwell’s favorite skateboarders with iconic sculptors from the American school of Minimalism. Gladwell’s work plays on a series of videos “Rodney Mullen vs Daewon Song” made by skateboarder Mullen. In Gladwell’s video, sculptural forms by Donald Judd, Carl Andre and Tony Smith are launched upon and flipped off by three skateboarders within a museum environment. The project looks at the creative process by which skateboarders are able to suspend or totally disregard any aesthetic, cultural and economic value these iconic sculptures have in order to explore their potential use.
4.Reza Golchin, Class, Iran, 2016, 01:49
This film shows students classes in Talesh city mountains.
5.Konstantin Krylovsky, A Letter to Lucy, Russia, 2016, 02:35
The video "A letter to Lucy" reflects in associative manner on man's place in the evolutionary chain and his impact on the environment. Lucy is the name given to an australopithecine, who lived about 3.2 million years ago; her skeleton is an important fragment in the chain of evolution from ape to human. This work represents a kind of message to our ancestors, which by using bright, but not very clear elusive images speaks first about the past, and then about the future. There are constantly interwoven motifs of "natural" and "manmade" (real materials and computer processing), as well as "random" and "planned" (images of animals seen in clouds of color) – the motifs that in fact determine the destiny of mankind.
6.Thomas Kyhn Rovsing Hjørnet, Discipline and phylogeny, Denmark, 2013, 01:42
The video is a montage of elements, still images and found footage, which, in the resulting combination, revolve around the theme discipline/form, as related to organisms in general and the human organism specifically. The soundtrack makes up an erratic supplement to the relative orderliness of the images.
7.Nuno Manuel Pereira, Ana B., The Kingdom, Portugal, 2013, 02:38
This conceptual video is a tableau that explores the complexities of the image: playing at the same time with the illusion of reality in film movement and the impossibility of narrative and temporal linearity to understand the multiple layers of meanings an image provides to a spectator. The different scales also redistribute the fictional space in its relationship with the spectator’s view. The video is also an allegory of freedom and imprisonment: the birds and their rituals can somehow relate to humans’ behavior in their weird and timeless quest for the ultimate freedom.
8.Jean-Michel Rolland, The Race, France, 2013, 03:45
What are human doing to horses? Rhythmed by the race of five horses shot in Marseille Bor?ly, this video, tribute to Muybridge, doesn't try to take the public into the universe of racetracks but rather to communicate them the frenzy felt during the break-neck speed of this painful race.
9.Lyuba Sautina, Plastic Flowers, Russia, 2016, 02:30
What could be more beautiful than blooming flowers? The fascinating process upon a closer view turns out to be just a crumpled plastic bag – an article of our daily consumption.
10.Alysse Stepanian, Philip Mantione (sound design), #MemoryoftheUniverse. Syria Planum: For Water for Oil, USA, 2016, 07:22
As more humans and other animals are displaced due to climate change and drought, petropolitical wars will be overshadowed by urgent needs such as access to fresh water. Historically, the bodies and reproductive organs of women and cows have been subjugated in patriarchal societies. The protagonist in this work is half-human, half-cow. She wanders the desolate Martian landscape, including the Syria Planum, and bears witness to the destructive behavior of humans. As the world looks away from crimes that are unmet with restitution, their aftermaths resonate in the dark recesses of our minds and metaphorically continue to live in the memory of the universe.
11.Sofia Slonim, Anna Kobylchenko, Sergey Samodin, Sergey’s Dream, Russia, 2016, 05:18
Sergei's Dream is only one of many dreams, telling about the ideal city where people do not interrupt the endless construction of a new world. Perhaps there will be no place for people in this world, but so far we have to walk amongst the geometric beauties of the Maze and look for an area, where a person can feel like human. All we have to do is to be complementary to the new geometry of the city that was once called Moscow. As a soundtrack for the video the music of Oleg Karavaichuk was used.
